故事还要从这里说起——
最近，来自美国、英国、澳大利亚和印度的四位外籍记者，听说今年是红军长征胜利80周年之后，分别去重走了长征路上的不同路段，以新的视角写下了他们的感触。
从他们的文字可以看出，在红军长征胜利80年后的今天，这一悲壮史诗依然可以拨动全球数百万人的心弦。
Eighty years after the end of the Chinese Red Army\’s epic expedition, the mass migration is still capable of stirring the hearts of millions across the globe.
下面来听听四位老外的长征故事吧——

此前，奥尼尔对于长征的了解只限于一些皮毛，但重走了湖南、甘肃两个省的长征路后，奥尼尔对于这段历史有了全新的认识，对于长征精神也有了自己的感悟。
\”Before going on this trip, my knowledge regarding the Long March was no more than a few general issues,\” said Tyler O\’Neil, during a trip to Hunan province, where the Second Front Army of the Red Army （红二方面军）departed for the Long March.
One of the things that impressed him the most is the transformation that happened in Shibadong village in Hunan, where the people worked really hard for a better life. This is such a dynamic way of showing the intrepid character （勇敢无畏的品格）of the Chinese people, said he.
76-year-old Long Decheng, whose family was mired in poverty （深陷贫困的泥潭）until 2013. Shortly after President Xi Jinping raised the concept of targeted poverty alleviation （精准扶贫）in the village, the family began to prosper from the development of local tourism.
\”She must have an incredibly hard life living in the remote mountains, but she still has this great positive energy（正能量）. This is the greatest testament （最好的证明）to the Long March spirit — resilience（坚韧不拔）.\”
补一段番外，大家能想象一个不懂汉语的美国人如何和苗族老奶奶交流吗？奥尼尔自己说：
After organizing a translation chain involving fellow China Daily reporter Liu Jing and a local fluent in both Mandarin and Miao dialect, we begin conversing.
Long starts, her statement is translated from Miao, to Mandarin, to English.
\”Where are you from?\”
\”I\’m from America.\”
English, Mandarin, Miao. Long replies. Miao, Mandarin, English.
\”You are so tall and handsome.\”
Looks like Long is quite the flirt.

体验了长征路途中最艰难的一段（四川）的英国绅士方丹，此行之前也很难真正体会红军战士面临的艰难困苦，但到了冰雪覆盖的夹金山山顶，他一切都明白了。
The snow-clad （积雪覆盖）mountains and barren（贫瘠荒芜）grasslands made the province one of the most arduous （险峻）sections for the Long March participants.
Even today, the route is grueling （累垮人的）. Fountain had to rely on thick clothes and bottled oxygen to avoid feeling dizzy and light-headed （头晕眼花） at the 4,114-meter summit of Jiajin Mountain, the first snow-capped mountain the Central Red Army encountered during its mammoth （庞大的） trek.
\”It was at this moment, in the bitter cold（严寒）, that I first began to truly appreciate what those Red Army troops went through,\” said Fountain, \” Their determination, heroism （英雄气概）and courage formed the basis of the modern China we know today.\”

We had been driving for almost two hours through a cold September morning up a steep（陡峭）, winding （蜿蜒）mountain track that was eaten away by landslips from below and strewn with（布满）boulders from above. As we climbed ever higher, the clouds descended around us until all that could be seen ahead or to the side was a blanket of white（白茫茫的一片）.

澳大利亚帅哥亚当·赫加蒂也有同样的共鸣。在长征始发地江西站，赫加蒂采访了101岁高龄的老红军王承登。听老红军讲述艰难岁月，赫加蒂深受鼓舞。
Adam Hegarty, an Australian national, echoed that sentiment. In Jiangxi province, the starting point of the Long March, Hegarty spoke with a 101-year-old Red Army veteran and found inspiration in the hardships he recalled.
令像他这样的外国记者印象深刻的是，当地人已将长征精神继承下来，并在老区脱贫攻坚的“新长征”上将其发扬光大。
The reporters like him have been impressed that the Long March spirit has been inherited and adopted by local people in their own \”New Long March\” to shake off poverty.
\”Eighty years ago, 50,000 Red Army soldiers were killed near this region … ambushed during the early days of the Communist forces\’ Long March trek which eventually laid an important foundation （奠定了重要基础） for the Communist victory in the civil war. In many ways, a battle continues – against poverty,\” said Hegarty.

Today the province is posting double-digit （两位数）growth, with its GDP in 2015 crossing（超过）the one-trillion-yuan mark （标杆）. It now has airports that connect to all parts of the country, a high-speed rail network and gleaming highways. From a place that not long didn\’t even have a decent highway; it\’s now driving on the information superhighway（信息高速公路）.
During the visit, Kidwai said the Long March is defined by the selfless spirit of the participants, even in the face of daunting （令人生畏的）difficulties.
\”Most of China, especially the western part, was underdeveloped 80 years ago. To put it mildly, the infrastructure was not world class and the army wasn’t the strong force it is today. Finding even essential items was not easy. Given all those factors, it’s truly remarkable that thousands of people volunteered to face the sacrifices, suffering and heartaches just for love of their country,” Kidwai said.
